Course Description

Welcome to Guilford College! This team-taught class will introduce you to college life, help develop your academic skills and intellectual curiosity, and introduce you to a vibrant community of learners, from students to faculty members. Initiate is built around two fundamental questions: “Who are we?” and “What does it mean to be curious?” In this class, we will focus on games, collaboration, and competition, analyzing gameplay from multiple perspectives, cultures, and disciplines. What is a game? Why are they so popular across cultures, and why are they important? What can games teach us about ourselves and the world around us? We will explore these questions and more as we get to know each other and Guilford College.

We are experiencing unique and trying times. This course will explore games, but it does not make light of the challenges in our world or any others that people in this class are facing. We will explore theories that consider games, play, competition, and cooperation as beneficial, even necessary to survive and thrive.
