The word “modern” has different meanings in different contexts. During the semester we will explore visual art in Europe and America from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, which is known in art history as Modern Art. This course emphasizes recognition of major examples of painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, etc., and comprehension of the relevant social and historical contexts. These elements will be considered individually and together in order to better understand the developments in artistic production during the modern period. Writing assignments and projects throughout the semester will relate to your final individual project in which you re-envision an artist’s work through a work of art of your own.  You will also create a collaborative exhibition to pull together and share your individual research.
